My family, friends and I have noticed a great deal of improvement since I’ve started studying with Mara over six months ago. She taps into her personal experience of learning and living with a foreign language to keep the learning process enjoyable. Each lesson is visual and incorporates speech, vocabulary, reading, writing, and listening. The classes and homework are all on Google Docs which I find to be convenient and organized. Taking classes with Mara via Skype allows me to have a flexible studying schedule and ensures that we never miss a class no matter where we are in the world.

I was referred to Mara by a friend who took weekly classes with her leading up to a trip to South America. Obviously my friend had an excellent Spanish-learning experience as Mara came highly recommended. I was slightly apprehensive as I live in San Francisco and Mara is located in Chicago… Meaning classes would be conducted via Skype, which I had never done before. I have had 3 classes now with Mara and it is fabulous! She somehow seems to understand exactly how I learn (after just 3 hours together!) I look forward to advancing my Spanish further with Mara.

Things were not going very well at my college level Spanish course at Loyola, I bombed my midterm and was getting very discouraged with the class. I was trying everything, going to the Language Lab and even professor’s hours. I finally took a friends advice and went for tutoring with Mara. I aced my final and salvaged my semester. I just wish I had done it sooner.
I’ve been studying with Mara for the past 3 months and I have to say her teaching style is very helpful. She helped me identify the best way to learn a language: by association of the images, sounds and thoughts. Its different from the boring style of lecturing which may as well go in one ear and out the other. With Mara helping me I was able to anchor the concepts behind nouns, adjectives, verbs, etc into my mind with powerful association techniques like visual and conceptual association. Its very affective.

I took spanish a few years in high school and visited argentina for a few months. I was never very good at it. It took me three years to get to spanish 2 (you do the math). She made it so easy for me to learn, I actually enjoy it now instead of it being a drag (like it used to be before). I am so happy, I can’t wait to use what I learn with my new spanish speaking clients.

    Muchas Gracias!!! :)

During my six month study abroad in Argentina, I had private Spanish lessons with Mara every week. With her help I was able to master the difficulties that I had, as a poor Spanish speaker coming from Germany, in a new Spanish speaking environment. Thanks to her efforts I passed all my subjects (in Spanish) even with good grades. She teaches very flexible and therefore she perfectly adapted to my wants and needs. Every lessons was prepared really well in advance so that we always had a clear structure. Mara uses new, fresh and innovative teaching methods which I liked better than the conventional Spanish classes that I had before. After my stay in Buenos aires the option via Skype is especially for me suiting, since I am constantly traveling and once a week I have my Spanish date with her to maintain what I have learned in the past.

Many thanks y un abrazo fuerte

Last year, I was preparing for a trip to an unnamed Caribbean island. I had studied Spanish in college and had picked up a smidgen while working in restaurants and in construction, but I was certainly out of practice and was finding it hard to regain my form. After meeting with Mara for an hour once a week for a month, I had the confidence to travel abroad in a Spanish-speaking environment and not be intimidated by a language barrier. Mara’s casual, conversational approach helped me to relax and view language learning from a different perspective: as a personalized, gradual process that accumulates knowledge and fluency over time; not a rigid, rote-learning method of memorization.
    Muchas gracias y buena suerte!

Hands down amazing teacher! I had learned Spanish in high school and college but felt like after college I had lost a large portion of what I knew. In addition, I felt like I needed to finish what I started. After interviewing a number of tutors, I chose Mara. I couldn’t be happier with the choice. Not only have I brushed up on some forgotten Spanish, I’ve learned so much more about the language than I ever knew. I would recommend Mara to anyone serious about learning Spanish!

Its been 5 years since I took high school Spanish. When I decided to take lessons again I was introduced to Mara. She has been such a great resource. I’ve tapped back into the knowlegde from a few years ago but now I have a much better understanding of pronunciation and I am learning so much more naturally with her lesson plans. Thanks Mara!

Although I had studied Spanish in high school and university, I was still struggling to adapt to the local accent and vocabulary when I arrived in Argentina. Mara was such a great teacher and really helped me to improve my speaking skills…and help me not to sound like such a yanqui! She is not only well-prepared and professional, but she also keeps learning fun and interesting. Thanks Mara!
